SEO Basics: How to Rank Higher on Google in 2026

Search engine optimization can feel overwhelming from the outside — there's no shortage of advice, and much of it contradicts itself. The good news is that most of the real-world impact comes from a relatively small set of fundamentals, applied consistently over time. Here's where we tell clients to focus first.

Start with intent, not just volume

Keyword research tools make it tempting to chase whichever term has the highest search volume. But a high-volume keyword with the wrong intent behind it — informational searches when you're selling a service, for example — will bring traffic that never converts. Prioritize keywords that match what someone is actually trying to accomplish when they type that search.

Give every page a clear job

Each page on your site should target one well-defined topic, with a title tag and meta description that accurately describe what's on it. Pages that try to rank for everything typically rank for nothing. If you find yourself covering multiple distinct topics on one page, that's usually a sign it should be split into separate pages.

Technical health is non-negotiable

Content quality can only take you so far if the technical foundation is weak. The essentials to get right:

  • Speed — both real load time and Google's Core Web Vitals metrics.
  • Mobile responsiveness — Google indexes and ranks based primarily on the mobile version of your site.
  • Clean site structure — a logical URL hierarchy and internal linking help search engines understand how your pages relate to each other.
  • Crawlability — no broken links, unnecessary redirect chains, or blocked pages that should be indexed.

Earn links instead of chasing them

Backlinks still matter, but the tactics that worked a decade ago — directory submissions, link exchanges, low-quality guest posts — carry little weight today and can actively hurt you. The links that move rankings now come from publishing content genuinely useful enough that other sites want to reference it.

Measure what matters

Rankings are a means to an end, not the goal itself. Track organic traffic, and more importantly, the conversions and leads that traffic produces. A page ranking in position one for a keyword that never converts is worth far less than a page in position five that consistently generates enquiries.

SEO rewards consistency over cleverness. Get the fundamentals right, keep publishing content that genuinely helps your audience, and the rankings tend to follow.
