Choosing Between WordPress and a Custom Web App

One of the most common questions we hear from prospective clients is whether their next project should be built on WordPress or as a fully custom application. There's no universally correct answer — the right choice depends on what the site actually needs to do, both today and as it grows.

When WordPress is the right call

WordPress excels at content-driven sites that need to launch quickly and be managed day-to-day by non-technical staff: blogs, brochure sites, and straightforward e-commerce stores built on WooCommerce. Its enormous plugin ecosystem means common functionality — contact forms, SEO tooling, basic booking systems — is usually a plugin away rather than something to build from scratch.

When a custom application makes more sense

A custom build earns its cost when your business logic doesn't fit neatly into a plugin-based mold. That typically shows up as:

  • Complex workflows — multi-step approval processes, role-based permissions, or logic specific to how your business operates.
  • Tight integrations — syncing in real time with internal systems, inventory, or third-party APIs beyond what a plugin reliably supports.
  • Performance at scale — high traffic or data volume that off-the-shelf platforms start to strain under.
  • Long-term differentiation — when the software itself is part of your competitive advantage, not just a supporting tool.

Questions worth asking before you decide

  • Does an existing plugin already solve 80% of what I need, or would I be forcing a fit?
  • Who will maintain this day-to-day, and what's their technical comfort level?
  • What does this need to look like in two or three years, not just at launch?
  • Is speed to market more important right now than long-term flexibility?

Neither option is inherently better — they're built for different problems. The right choice comes down to your timeline, budget, and how much the platform needs to bend to your specific processes rather than the other way around. When in doubt, it's worth a conversation before committing to either path.
